Our Challenge

Unemployment Crises

Côte d'Ivoire's unemployment and poverty rates stand at 36% and 39.5% respectively, each roughly ten times higher than in the United States, indicating widespread hardship in employment and living conditions for millions.

These challenges are heartbreaking and have a devastating impact on people's lives. Families are torn apart, children are denied an education, and people are forced to live in squalor.

We need to do more to help the people of Côte d'Ivoire overcome these challenges.

Poverty Crisis

The poverty rate using the national poverty line declined to reach 39.5 percent in 2018/19 from 44.0 percent in 2015, while the middle class expanded from 34.6 percent to 36.5 percent over the same period. But a third of the middle-class households are still vulnerable to poverty.

Poverty rate: In 2015, the poverty rate was 28% using a poverty line of $1.90 per day, and 46% using the national poverty line. In 2018, the poverty rate was 39.5%. The government's social protection strategy aims to reduce poverty to just under 29% by 2028.

Health Crisis

In 2022, the infant mortality rate in Côte d'Ivoire was 52.4 deaths per 1,000 live births.

17.8% of adult women and 7.3% of adult men in Côte d'Ivoire are obese, which is lower than the regional average.

The U.S. President's Malaria Initiative (PMI) was launched in 2017 to reduce malaria cases in Côte d'Ivoire. Other health concerns in Côte d'Ivoire include measles and meningitis. Poliovirus has been identified in Côte d'Ivoire in the past year, and travelers may be at increased risk of exposure.

The CDC recommends that unvaccinated or partially vaccinated travelers receive a complete polio vaccination series before traveling, and that adults who received a complete series as children may get a single booster dose.
